What do we forget about oral hygiene?

One in four (24.5%) Lithuanian residents has their oral health checked for prevention. Almost a fifth visit the dentist only when they can no longer bear the tooth pain, 37% when they feel slight pain, and 12% drop by when the pain has lasted a long time. Most worrying is that young people don't take care of their oral health either – 11.7% of those surveyed aged 20–29 indicated that they don't visit the dentist at all. One of the main causes of oral problems is improper oral hygiene and dental care. So people often complain of bleeding gums, bad breath, yellowed teeth or nagging pain – these signs prove that it's worth taking care of daily dental care and hygiene. You need to change your routine and forget the notion that it's enough for the teeth to be brushed twice a day. Lots of microbes and bacteria accumulate between the teeth, where an ordinary toothbrush doesn't reach. What should you not forget, and what are the main care principles? Change your toothbrush every two or three months. Mouthwash CANNOT replace a toothbrush and toothpaste. It's only an additional aid to oral care. After brushing your teeth, it's advisable to also clean the back of the tongue with a special brush – bacteria swarm here too, causing bad breath. Of course, bad breath can also come from other causes, such as impaired digestion or poor eating habits. Use interdental floss. Rinse your mouth with water after every meal. Eat properly: use fewer sweets, carbohydrates and starch. Visit the dentist and oral hygienist regularly.
