The prevalence of periodontal diseases among Lithuanian residents is very high (about 95%), so it is important to properly examine every patient for these conditions and to select an optimal treatment and prevention regimen.
Periodontology is the prevention and treatment of diseases of the tissues around the teeth (the gums and bone). During a periodontal examination, the condition of the tissues is assessed comprehensively: the state of the periodontium is evaluated, the gum and bone “pockets” are measured, and X-rays are taken and discussed. The doctor identifies the factors that could influence the development of the disease and prescribes appropriate treatment.
The most common periodontal diseases are gingivitis and periodontitis.
Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums which, if untreated, can reach the bone and progress into periodontitis. The signs of gingivitis are red, swollen and bleeding gums.
Periodontitis is a disease in which inflammation damages the tissues surrounding the tooth: the gums, the periodontal ligament, the cementum and the alveolar bone. With periodontitis, the gums are bright red and bleed not only when brushing but also when eating, and pain appears. The gums suppurate, the teeth begin to move and fall out, because the ligaments supporting the tooth break down and part of the jawbone recedes and dissolves. Various forms of periodontitis are distinguished, differing in their nature, development and treatment effectiveness. Periodontitis can be diagnosed in people of any age, but most often in adults.
Periodontitis is harder to notice and can progress slowly until the teeth begin to move. The main symptoms of periodontitis:
- Bleeding gums
- The appearance of gum “pockets”
- Suppurating gums
- Exposure of the tooth-root surface
- Bad breath and an unpleasant taste in the mouth
- Dissolution of the tooth bone
- Loosening of the teeth
