How should you prepare for surgical procedures?
Usually, before a specific operation or procedure, the doctor gives precise instructions, which it is very important to follow so that the process and healing go smoothly. However, oral and dental surgery also has general rules by which you can prepare in advance:
tidy your home before the procedure so that you return to an orderly and clean environment, and make up your bed - after many surgical procedures you need to avoid physical exertion, including housework;
stock up on suitable food in advance - usually, after invasive procedures, you can only eat soft, room-temperature food for a while;
arrange who will drive you home after the procedure, especially when sedation is used during it;
have frozen ice cubes or special compresses at home, disposable sterile dressings ready to bite on, and pain medication in case it is needed;
postpone planned sport and active activity for a while.
How should you behave after surgical procedures?
Oral and dental surgery is more complex than simple therapeutic dental treatment, and the healing process after it is greatly influenced by following the doctor's instructions. Ice compresses can be used to relieve pain and swelling, which help reduce inflammation. On the first day it is recommended not to brush the teeth with toothpaste, but to rinse the mouth very gently with water. It is especially important not to smoke or consume alcohol after the operation, as this slows healing. You should also avoid hard, crunchy and sticky foods for a while and not drink through a straw. If the surgeon has prescribed antibiotics or other medicines, they must be taken exactly according to the instructions. Healing can take from 2 days to a month - it all depends on the complexity of the procedure.
